A superb quality modern reproduction of a WW1 bronze memorial plaque, remembering 'Col Robert Beech C.M.G. D.S.O. Commanding 2/1 Scottish Horse". In 1916 It was decided that some form of memorial would be established for presentation to the next of kin of those that died during the war. A government committee was established to decide the nature of this memorial, and in August 1917 it was determined that it would take the form of a bronze plaque, the design of which would be decided by a public competition with a winning prize of £250. This design was a prototype that lost out to the now-familiar "Widow's Penny" design that was ultimately selected, which features Britannia with a British lion and the inscription, "He Died For Freedom and Honour." With facsimile version of King George V's condolence letter to the next of kin attached to the reverse.
